Are microphones provided in classrooms? If so, where and how do I use them?

Select auditoriums and classrooms are equipped with microphones.

To search for classrooms with microphones:

  1. Use Room Inventory.
  2. To run a search for classrooms with a microphone, check the box next to "Instructor Microphone" and then click the "Search" button. You can narrow down your search by checking additional features or using the drop down menus.

Using a classroom microphone:

There are three types of microphones: fixed, wireless, or wireless rechargeable. To learn more about the microphones, read the Microphone Instructions or watch the classroom microphones video guide.

I am trying to show a video in my classroom, but there is no sound coming from the speakers. How do I fix this?

If you are playing a VHS or DVD:

  2. Increase the system volume by using the volume up/down buttons on the control panel at the instructor station.

If you are showing the video from your laptop:
  1. Verify that the audio cord (the thin, black cord in the pocket of the instruction station) is plugged into your laptop's headphone jack.
  2. Verify that the "Audio Mute" button on the system control panel is not on. When this button is selected, the audio will not work.
  3. Try increasing the volume on the laptop.
  4. Finally, try increasing the system volume by using the volume up/down buttons on the control panel.

Do any classrooms offer hearing assistance equipment?

All projection capable classrooms have an installed closed caption feature. The Office of Classroom Management Web site includes a Room Search page that lists attributes and features specific to each room, including hearing assistance.

Some auditoriums have additional hearing assistance equipment. Information about this equipment can be found here.

There is not a CD player in the classroom. How do I play music during my class?

To play an audio CD in a Projection Capable Classroom, you have two options:

  1. Using your laptop:
    • Insert the CD into your laptop.
    • Connect the audio cable from the instructor station (the thin, black cord) to your laptop headphone jack.
    • Press the "Laptop" button on the control panel of the instructor station.
  2. Using the DVD player:
    • Insert the CD into the DVD player.
    • Press the "DVD" button on the control panel of the instructor station.
    • If there is no audio, try playing the CD with the projection system powered off.

To adjust the volume, use the up/down volume buttons on the control panel of the instructor station.

  • If the volume is turned all the way up and you still are not able to hear the audio very well, you may need to adjust the volume on your laptop.
  • If you are not getting any sound, verify that the "Audio Mute" button is not on, as this button will mute all audio coming from the projection system.

Can I play music and/or videos from my iPod through the projection system?

The data/video projectors in the Projection Capable Classrooms can display audio and video from iPods. To play your iPod, you will need to have an iPod AV cable (available from Apple and other retailers). To connect your iPod:

  1. Connect the single cable to the iPod's headphone jack.
  2. The other end of the AV cable has three connectors. Connect these (to the front of the VCR) as follows:
    • Yellow: Connect this to the VCR's video IN jack.
    • White: Connect this to the VCR's left audio IN jack.
    • Red: Connect this to the VCR's right audio IN jack.
  3. Turn on the projection system by pressing the "VCR" button on the control panel at the instructor station. The system is ready for use once the red light next to the VCR button has stopped flashing.
  4. Set the VCR to "line input" by pressing the channel up/down buttons on the front of the VCR. Press one of these buttons until the VCR's display reads "F-1" or "L-1".

If this does not work, you may need to enable the TV output on your iPod (the iPod cannot display video through both the internal screen and the AV cable at the same time.) To do this:

  1. From the main iPod menu, select "Videos".
  2. From this menu, select "Video Settings".
  3. Change the "TV Out" option to "Ask". This setting tells the iPod to prompt you each time you play a video file.
