The Office of Classroom Management has embarked on a major technology upgrade plan for all 300 general purpose classrooms on the East Bank, West Bank and St. Paul campus locations.
The upgrade plan resulted from extensive studies of classroom needs and problems, and is based on input from faculty, instructional staff and students. The Senate Committees on Information Technology (SCIT), Finance and Planning (SCFP) and Education Policy (SCEP) have endorsed it. It has been also been briefed to the Regents as well as numerous collegiate, departmental and other groups throughout the U of M community. The original plan called for completion of the Technology Upgrade in all rooms by the end of FY2004. Due to funding constraints, completion has slipped into FY2007. Currently, more than 250, or 83 percent, of all UMTC general purpose classrooms have completed the tech upgrade. Feedback from faculty and students has been extremely enthusiastic!
The plan raises the bar for the baseline level of technology in all general purpose classrooms. Yesterday, the baseline was an overhead projector. Today the baseline is an Internet-connected "projection capable classroom", having a fixed data/video projector, smart interface, user-friendly control system with laptop plug-in, video/DVD input, wireless student networking, and modular add-ons for special, room dependent capabilities.
